Hi from Iowa USA

Hi, I'm Bryon from Iowa.

I am not a beader but my wife is. She does almost exclusively one-drop peyote stitching (hope I'm saying that right). Since I am the computer person of the family I help her download patterns and generally try to assist her.

One of the difficulties I saw her struggle with is keeping her place in a printed pattern. She had to continuously move her focus back and forth from her beaded work back to find her location in the pattern. She did a wonderful job but I always thought that it was an error-prone process. So I made a web page that displayed her patterns and spoke the color of the next bead(s) to her. All she had to do was hit the space bar on our laptop and the next bead was told to her. The space bar is pretty easy to find without shifting your eyes or your concentration too much. Since many modern web browsers have built-in speech capability, this was moderately easy.

Then I came across your site and saw that you allowed your users to create their own patterns. I think it would be really neat if a person could create a pattern with the Pattern Wizard and have their computer speak the pattern to them.

I'm not there yet but I thought you might be curious to see what I have so far. It you go to http://wiscons.com/BeadReader/ you can see we have a number of patterns in a format my reader understands. Since many of the patterns are purchased and the creator asked they not be shared I have locked them. But several are free and you could see and hear how everything works.

Let me know if you think there are any practical possibilities.

 Bryon

Bryon,

Welcome! Smile

Thanks so much for posting! Smile What an interesting idea, and what a great site!

I've alerted Terry (Support) to your message, as I'm a beader but definitely not that technical. I do think it's a wonderful idea, as I know exactly the difficulty your wife has had...I've had the same difficulty myself. It's distracting and soooooooooo easy to get confused while working from a graph. I know we've been discussing something similar for a long time, but certainly not executed this same way.

I'll let you two talk it out! Smile

Welocme to the group Byron,

What a great idea and one I have not heard of before that I can remember. Some patterns given the amount of change in colors and such would definitely be easier if us bead weavers didn't have to look away from our project to see the next one we needed. I too am not a computer tech, but it would be awesome if we could use it here!! Cool

I laminate my patterns and will pick up a couple rows and lay out in front of me, when I complete 2 or 3 rows I then mark them off with wet erase markers, saving money on prints alone.
Wal-Mart has a laminating machine for 19.99 and 60 pack of sheets are 15.99 (my best investment so far)

I use this with word and chart patterns especially portrait patterns, I love it!

Sherry,
That's an ingenious idea! Kiss It would really help in so many cases, to protect the patterns and not have to print them out repeatedly. Even if no moisture gets on them, patterns still show wear and tear after folding them just a few times. Laminating is the perfect solution! Also helps if you want to make the same thing at a later date. Kiss And being able to mark on the patterns is a great idea! I've usually been taking scrap pieces of paper and making notations for every row that I do, as I like to remake favorite patterns in different colors, but having the markers on laminate would be even better! Kiss
