Hi and welcome! 

The size of the pattern is a function of your yarn gauge and the number of stitches in the final pattern.  Depending on the yarn you're using for the afghan, divide the number of stitches vertically and then horizontally by your gauge.

For a simple (non-realistic) example, let's say your gauge was 5 stitches per inch by 5 stitches per inch.  And let's say your pattern turned out to be 10 stitches x 25 stitches.

That would mean your finished object would be 2" x 5".

So I hope you can see that whether or not the finished object will be large enough to make an afghan depends on your yarn gauge.    If it's not large enough when you divide it out, you could either add a border on the sides/top/bottom or make the finished pattern larger.  You could use a larger yarn...perhaps a bulky instead of a worsted weight.  You could also try working with the same yarn doubled.  If it's already a worsted weight, that would tend to make it more of a bulky weight.
