Discontinued yarn colour?
December 28, 2015 at 11:25:33 AM

Just made my first crochet portrait graph. I'm very excited to start!! I used the automatic lion brand wool ease colour selection however 3 of the colours are discontinued Sad What should I do? Changing the colours myself isn't an option since I'm awful at it, and I don't have any references to colours presently available. The colours are 620-198, 620-127, and 620-126.
Thanks
Lynn

Lynn,

Welcome!  Smile

Thanks for letting us know.  We'll have to contact Lion Brand about this, as they'll know if there are substitutions for the line.  We may unfortunately need to remove that palette if too many colors have been discontinued.

In the meantime, how about using the Stitchboard Basic Palette instead?  It has very basic colors in it, as we discovered the full palette had more colors than there were yarn choices.  If we remove the Wool-Ease palette you'd likely have to work with a different yarn, but you'd have a better chance of finding the colors you need in another line of yarn/another company's palette.

I'm so sorry...you must be very frustrated.  It's always irritating to discover that a company's products have been discontinued, particularly in the fiber area, because then substitutions need to be made.  Worse, because if you don't find an equal fiber in size, type and color, you're starting again from scratch.  Cry  I feel your pain!  I've been there myself in the discontinued fiber position, and no matter what, using substitutions for fibers can be a letdown.  Frown

Thanks for your quick reply Melanie Smiley

The idea of using another brand of yarn is a great idea! How about Red Heart Super Saver. For people in small towns, like myself, that brand is easily found. Unlike Lion Brand wool ease Sad

Lynn,

You're very welcome!  Smile

We've been talking for some time about making other brands available in the freePatternWizard.  Smile  I live in a somewhat small town, as well, and there are only two places to get yarn, a craft store and a department store.  So the choices are very, very limited.  And you're right, Red Heart Super Saver appears to be far easier to find than many other brands/types of yarn.  Smile

Thank you for the suggestion!  Smile  We may need to move it up in priority, particularly if we're going to lose the Lion Brand Wool Ease.

Hi Melanie,

I need your help again Smiley unfortunately I've had to order all my yarn from 3 different US companies Sad (I live in canada)
I ended up substituting the discontinued colour 620-126 chocolate brown to 620-129 Cocoa, I'm hoping it works Sad
Now my big question lol I still have to substitute 620-198 Glove and 620-177 Loden. Would you have any suggestions for those two colours? I've emailed Lion Brand and hoping they can help me, fingers crossed!

Any help would be greatly appreciated Smiley
Thanks
Lynn

Lynn,

I'm still trying to reach the correct person at Lion Brand (our original contact left the company, saying we'd be contacted by the new person for that department, who hasn't reached out to us yet).  I'm hoping to at least find out if a new person has taken over the job, and if not, when someone will.  Smile

My guess is this is also why we've been unaware of the discontinued status of some of their colors, as they may not have anyone yet to take on the job full time.

Meanwhile, if you look at the Wool Ease line on their website, are the colors there sufficient to help you find like colors or to at least help you find something by eye that works instead to substitute for the other two discontinued colors?  If you haven't seen it, this is the page listing Wool Ease colors, where all of them are showing:
http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/yarnInfo.cgi?start=0&yarnPage=1419766&pageLength=100

Even though you've emailed Lion Brand, I'm still working on the issue of our contact, because we really should be aware of these issues before you go to use any discontinued color!  I'm not entirely sure what's going on, but I hope to know early on next week.  Smile

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention!  Smile
