Hi there, I'm not admin, but I think I can answer your question. You're not doing anything wrong, it's just not possible to shrink it to fit in just a few pages and still have the graph large enough for us to see.

Personally, I choose the "graph and word chart" option. Then I only print the word chart part. I can always look at the graph onscreen if part of the word chart isn't making sense to me.

Welcome! 

What a beautiful image!  Love it! 

The graphs sometimes do print out over a large number of pages; the problem is that if we put it all on only a few pages, it may be very hard for some to read.  Fairly early on we worked on the size options and realized the charts were very hard to read if they were too small.   So Sherry is correct about that.  She's also correct about word charts...they're far easier to read, where it's possible to then keep the graph for reference.

In your post, I believe I'm sensing that your frustration is with the size of the graph as printed, rather than the output itself?  In other words, you're not saying the graph is too many stitches for your finished product, i.e., not that it produced a size that is too large for your finished afghan? 

About the word charts: they also tend to have a lot of pages, but as Sherry said, they're much easier to follow.  I admit the word charts are my favorite choice, as well, because it's so much easier to see the words written out and follow them, rather than trying to read a graph.

Please let me know if I've understood the problem correctly; if you're getting the wrong size for your finished product, then that would be a different problem than the one I think I've understood here.

I'm sorry if the freePatternWizard didn't make the kind of graph you wanted.  If you'd like, we can see if there are other options which might work better for you;  If that's the case, please let me know.    We're thinking that we could perhaps offer another option for printing, but we would need someone to test it out before we can commit to it.

If you'd still like to try a word pattern, by all means, choose the word pattern option or both grid & word pattern!    I really do find the word patterns very helpful.

As for "padding" the image, in its current way of handling images, the freePatternWizard cannot be set for a certain number of rows.  Stitches, yes; rows, no.  If the freePatternWizard didn't calculate the pattern length based on math, you would end up with a skewed image if you were to give it a certain fixed length for your pattern.

Anyway, please let me know and I'll see what we can do. 

P.S. You sound like a fellow cat lover!    LOL, it's like I always say, dogs have owners.  Cats have staff.

If you'd like, we can have you test some of the options we're trying to provide to make pattern printing more flexible.  If you're interested, please let me know.    We need to have people testing in order to know what they're looking for, so without someone being interested in testing, we can't change anything.

Newbie Needs Help!!

I just taped my pages together once I printed them out. I started out with the word pattern but quickly realized that since I wasn't using all the colors that the pattern called for that I couldn't tell by reading, what color I should change the written color to, so had to go to the graph and counting. I do like the size of the graph squares being able to see and count much better than the smaller squares I've used for crosstitch. Once taped I just fold my huge graph into manageable size and turn and fold as I go along the row. I don't have any problem with it.

Of course I am only using the 150 rows but still had to cut and tape 12 to 16 pages together. Worked find for me. I am crocheting two graphgans that I used pattern wizard for. Love it so far! Plan on doing many more!

That's a great idea!    I've done the same, taped pages together.  Part of the problem with not being able to use large paper to print out graphs (as one might get with a purchased cross stitch) pattern is that sometimes you have to find a different way to do something.  I haven't taped the pages together recently, but now I will!

That's personally reminiscent of making the large cross stitch pieces, such as the Lavender & Lace or the Mirabilia patterns, which are printed on very large paper, and (if one isn't careful) can wear so easily along the folds, because the paper is much thinner than normal printing paper.  So IMO your solution is a win-win!

Thank you, yes and if your paper is looking a little worn at the folding seams, slap a piece of tape on it. fixes it right up...


I have to have it taped as  I can't follow well flipping pages, I get very confused LOL. Tapeing works well for me. I hope it works as well for you.

Clear tape, duct tape...so many things that can be solved with tape, wouldn't you say? 

I agree...I prefer following a single very large page as opposed to even just a few smaller ones.
