Crochet Graph/Pattern help!
January 22, 2017 at 5:05:23 PM

Ok, I had someone make me a pattern of a picture that is black and white to make into an Afghan and I would LOVE to learn to do this myself. I have tried and tried again to create this pattern on my own, to no avail. I have tried the basic color pallets and I ended up with green faces and purple clothes, to trying the grey scale and ended up with 2 colors only, to choosing the black and white and got, well I don't know what I ended up with that time.

So, if I wanted to get a black and white photo to come out with shades of black, grey and whites, what in the world option on colors do I select? I'm starting to get aggravated with it, but I REALLY want to learn to do this. Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. I wish that I could attach the picture so that you could se what I'm talking about.....Thanks,,Devine

Devine,

I just posted an answer in the other spot you asked about this.  My answer is here.

Basically I asked if it would be ok to send me your image and I can try it out, hopefully find settings that work, and if I find there's a problem in the program, can then fix it.

If you want to try this, let me know and I'll send you an email to which you can reply and attach your image.

I am honestly giving up on making this pattern. Terry did a fabulous job on helping me and instructing me on this but, Iwhen I try to compile it I get the weirdest looking pattern possible. I just don't understand it.

Portia,

Wait!  Let's not give up.  I sent you an email with some info per your emailed request.

We'll see if we can get you something workable.  It really depends on the palette you're using since you're using a black and white image and need several shades of gray in yarn colors.

If you answer my email, we can take it from there.

Portia,

Yes, I received your email.  I'm seeing which of the 3 palettes you mentioned will be best for the black and white image you sent.  I expect to get back to you tomorrow (Sunday)  (Well, since it's after midnight, I guess that's really today. Smile).

Hi,

I've been reading through this thread and I am interested in what the outcome was for Portia. Were you able to come to a satisfactory answer for your pattern? I've been having a similar issue with my first time attempt at making a pattern from a photo, although mine is colour, not black and white.

I'm not asking for assistance (yet!), I'd just like to know if someone else who has a similar issue has got the solution, so that I know it will indeed work.

Congratulations on what seems to be an extremely powerful piece of software, and thank you for making it available for free.

Kind Regards,

Sharon

Hi, Sharon.

I temporarily had to hold off finishing the pattern for Portia but am back to it now.

Her image is a black and white photo of two people.  Since the original was apparently a .jpg, it was saved somewhat compressed.  This compression introduces noise and stray colors.  This noise is by far the most common cause of stray stitches of many different colors.  So even though the original image was black and white, it actually contains 256 different colors — some shades of gray, and even blues.

The PatternWizard is sensitive to all these various colors and many will show up in the final pattern.

SO, the first thing I did was run the image through Photoshop and had it turn it into a true black and white.  So there were then only black, white, and shades of gray.  Then I told the program to use only certain colors from the palette (Section 5 "I will choose my colors"), checked the "Antialias On" box in section 8 (which helps smooth out lines), and varied the brightness and contrast a little.

I was able to get several usable charts from this.  The only thing I have yet to do is resize it all into a usable chart for what she's wanting to stitch.

I'll hopefully have more information this weekend as we generate the final output.  I'll post again when we're done.

Terry

How do I get a graph page and start to put my own stiches in? I have done everything by hand creating my own patterns doing it the old way with graph paper and pencil. So I thought this program would help me eliminate doing it by hand. Any idea's?

Brandie,

Welcome! Smile

Currently, our program is strictly for working from images, not for making patterns from scratch. We do have a new version in development which will let you make patterns with individual stitches, but since it's still in development, it's not available for use on the site just yet.

I've looked and looked for something that helps with creating the old way (I owned a program like it many years ago), but unless you want to pay for a program, those seem to have gone the way of the dodo, sadly! Frown
