Welcome!

You're correct; the "standard" stitch is single crochet. The reason we call it that is because it's called a double crochet in the UK (isn't that confusing? What we call a double crochet here is a treble crochet in the UK). This way, with one generic term we cover both American and UK terms at the same time. BTW, thanks for clarifying American single crochet, so I would know exactly what you're talking about!

So you're doing perfectly fine...just keep on with the single crochet and that's exactly what you should be doing!
