You're correct, the blocks in the pattern each represent one stitch.

With an afghan, the best thing to do first is to figure out your gauge by making a swatch (sigh, almost no one likes doing that, but it's essential to get an idea of how many stitches and rows you'll need for your finished piece, otherwise you could end up with something that's about 30k stitches ). Your swatch will tell you how many stitches per inch you'll produce with your chosen fiber/crochet hook or knitting needles. This will vary from person to person, so unfortunately there's no other way to get the numbers you need.

From there you can figure out how many stitches you'll need across for your finished desired afghan size. It's then recommended that you give the freePatternWizard an image with the dimensions of the size you want; for example, if you want an afghan that's 50 stitches across by 50 rows, you'd give it an image that's 50 pixels x 50 pixels and note in option #6 that the number of stitches are 50 across. (This won't guarantee it will be 50 rows vertically, only because the freePatternWizard currently will figure out the vertical size for you. While that will change at some point in the future, for now that can only be figured by the freePatternWizard.)

This is why it's important to figure out your gauge beforehand, so your afghan will be the size you want.
