Black cloth help
May 14, 2021 at 3:01:30 PM
So, I started a new project today on black 16 count aida and I can't see to follow the grid! I had 18 ct linen and knew that would be impossible, so went with the other and I still have a problem. Any tips for using black cloth? I may go to 14 ct and see if that helps.

I had the same problem with black linen! I was so thrilled with not having to make fractional stitches because I was using linen, then discovered how hard it was to see the stitches.
I never finished the project.
Things that were suggested to me at the time were to use something light on my work surface (LOL, mostly my lap) and another way is to light up a work surface (such as a light showing on the lighter colored item on your work surface). You can also try a bright work light shining on the fabric itself, something with a bulb made for closeup work. A magnifier could help, too. (I did not have more than the fabric to put on my lap back then.)
Some of the solutions aren't easy and some can be pricey (like a really good closeup work light), but they do tend to help.
The advantage is that if you can work it out, anything stitched on black fabric looks soooo stunning!
I had finished other black fabric items back when my eyes were far better and seeing on black didn't drive me nuts.

Years ago, I did a cheetah on black and absolutly love it....my poor old eyes just aren't the same anymore. Thank you for the suggestions. I'm going to try very hard not to give up the ship on this one, but it's certainly not going to be easy.

No doubt, the cheetah must be gorgeous!
But yeah, we get older and that black fabric is so incredibly hard to see.
Hope you find a good solution.

Well I gave it up, going to get a lighter fabric. I hate quitting, but I found a mistake and that was that. I got very frustrated when it called for black thread, but figured I would work around that....however, the mistake I made was too much for me. It pushed me over the edge

I'm so sorry, and I completely understand...I gave up on the last project on black, too.
It's such a crying shame because black fabric looks sooooo gorgeous, but it's just too hard on the eyes.

I found a color called chalk board black and it's easier on the eyes...going to give it a shot.

That's fantastic! Thanks for posting about it.
Is it more of a dark gray shade? Maybe that's the key to my unfinished projects on black...would be great if there's a better solution than just leaving the stuff in the penalty corner!

Yes, it's a dark dark gray. I got 14 aida and even stitching black on it is much easier. I say give it a go! Worth a shot anyway.

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this site, I just signed up about 10 minutes ago. I have been doing fractional cross stitches for many years and i'm sorry but I must disagree that they are difficult. I have no problem doing them, if anyone wants help with figuring them out perhaps i can give some advice.

Sherly,
Welcome!
Thank you...that's such a lovely offer!
I think part of the problem for some is the fabric. I find it's so easy with linen, but with Aida and a regular blunt end needle it's too dull to separate the fabric weave enough to get the needle through easily. It fights every effort! The only way I've found is to use a sharp needle, but that can mess up the regular full stitches by piercing the cloth in the wrong spots.

Thank you for your kind reply, yes you do need to be extremely careful if you are using a sharp needle. I switched to regular sewing needles because I only use Aida cloth and they made it somuch easier to to do the 3/4 stitches.

Sherly,
How do you find sewing needles with big enough eyes? I think what I've been using for fractional stitches is a sharp tapestry needle. Except I live in a place where there are no longer any stitching stores, so options are few.
I like to work with linen, because then fractional stitches are soooo easy!
