v2.12.4 Now support both tunisian horizontal and vertical stitch
May 26, 2014 at 1:38:57 PM
After hearing from a few members regarding whether crochet tunisian stitch should be horizontal or vertical, we did some major research. (Well, not me since I'm not a stitcher. I just do what I'm told from the test results!
)
Many thanks to member
BetwixtTheStitch
for spending the time to actually stitch up many 4x4 test swatches to get some actual data.
We have now changed the tunisian stitches so the freePatternWizard now offers both horizontal and vertical. As it turns out, it depends on hook size and stitch.
Some notes along this line from Melanie:
Quote:
ALWAYS TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.
If you don't do a swatch and the stitch is horizontal instead of vertical or vertical instead of horizontal, since it's based on our determinations, it may not match. So as with anything knitting or crochet, it really depends on what
*
you're
*
doing.
Horizontal:
TSS (a.k.a. Tunisian Simple Stitch or regular Tunisian) with hook sizes N on up
TKS (a.k.a. Tunisian Knit Stitch), all hook sizes.
Vertical:
TSS (a.k.a. Tunisian Simple Stitch or regular Tunisian), hook sizes up to and including L.
TPS (a.k.a. Tunisian Purl Stitch), all hook sizes.
Just a side note: After evaluating all of Sherry's swatch data, I may make a slight change to the freePatternWizard tunisian stitch proportions. Not sure yet.

This may be a silly question, but do you know what weight(s) yarn (worsted, dk, sport, etc.) BetwixtTheStitch used?

Welcome!
While I'd have to check with BetwixtTheStitch for an answer to your question, I suspect she used a regular worsted weight;
however
, I would strongly suggest that before stitching anything to check your gauge, as your results may be different based on tension. As much of a pain as swatching is (LOL, is there anyone who doesn't despise it?), that's the only way of assuring you'll have the most precise results. You may find your stitches are horizontal, where someone else's may be vertical, or vice versa. The way to make it "yours" is to know your own personal stitch proportions!

That's actually a very good question because it does make a difference. The swatches I worked were worsted weight.
I've also posted results that I've gotten with other weights elsewhere. The caveat is that there is nothing "uniform" in the weight system, it's too broad.
So working swatches with the yarn you want to work with really is the best way.
I'm going to throw out another piece of advice on working swatches, work it large and take your measurements out of the middle for the most accurate measurements.

Sherry,
Thank you for
all
of that useful info!
Tension is such a personal thing. From bitter experience I know not to take someone else's figures and consider them valid for my own work. It's the best way to have to take a perfectly good project and either frog it completely or give it away to someone else. Which is fine if it's meant as a gift, but if not, it can be completely heartbreaking.
Love
your tip about working your swatches large! There's nothing wrong with working very large...the worst you can possibly do when swatching is to work too small and get a very inaccurate result...and then having to completely frog or give something away.

Thank you so much!
I asked, because my stitches always seen to come up 'square', no matter how big my swatch was, and since I'm new to tunisian, I thought I was doing something wrong!
I finally figured out (probably from the info you posted elsewhere, BetwixtTheStitch!)
that it was due to my using #2 weight yarn (50g=180yds), using a J-10 (6mm) hook. It makes a very thin, light fabric.

I'm so glad you figured that out.
When working tunisian you should use a hook at least 2 sizes larger than what's recommended on the label, anyway.
That lighter fabric would have a nice drape to it if you were to choose to use it in a garment or a scarf.
